GHT (Essex UK) kick off the new 2008 vigils with a selection of sites which will be a mix of new and old. After the first investigation, things have got off to a bang and the Team looks forward to the forthcoming investigation year...

2008 INVESTIGATIONS

HYTHE CHURCH (KENT)
DATE:   1ST FEBRUARY 2008
TIME:    22:00HRS
TEAM:   COLIN - LIZ - DAVE - EMMA - PETE - JAMES - SHEREE
GUESTS:    BEYOND THE MIST (EAST KENT PARANORMAL GROUP)  MANDA - ALAN - BEV - JAMIE & GUESTS
EQUIPMENT:  DVD CAMCORDER (NIGHTVISION) - 6 X DIGITAL CAMERAS - 2 X EMF METERS - 1 X LASER THERMOMETER - 6 X TWO-WAY RADIOS - TORCHES

This certainly got to rank as one of the weirdest locations yet visited by GHT.... Inside a church at night!!!!!  ...and not just any church, no..  this one just happens to contain a rarity in the UK, an "ossuary", a crypt with the remains of 2000 skulls and 8000 thigh bones of unknown origin. One of Colin`s ambitions has been to always do an investigation inside a church or cathedral, the latter proberly never possible, but with the kind generosity of the BTM team and the Vicar of Hythe, access to all areas of the church was granted. Thus began what was at first a fairly uneventful evening, but which would later turn into one with far reaching implications...

REPORT

As ever, GHT recorded events in full, all time-indexed for later reference and brilliantly written out clearly and concisely by Core Team member James. We do not alter these records to fit these pages, so what you read here is as it happened on the investigation. No doubt BTM will cover this investigation with a report of their own, and we would urge you to go to their site via our LINKS PAGE to read their account.

INSIDE THE CHURCH

22:00hrs:      arrive at church, start handing out equipment for the night ahead.     22:10hrs:  Jamie opens up access to the spiral stairway, Pete and Dave explore this with other members of BTM. A high doorway on an upper level was opened by Dave and Pete and a slight moan was heard.     22:12hrs:     Pete and Dave both get the name Peter     22:51hrs:  Pete and Liz pick up on Alexander, he appears to be in his 60`s, long withdrawn face, bushy grey eyebrows, blue eyes, and wearing a long overcoat of the 1950`s style, much like a "gangster".     22:53hrs:    Dave picks up on the name Benedict     23:30hrs:    Liz picks up on the name Lucinda
During the walkabout inside the church, both BTM`s Bev and Colin from GHT picked up on the name William. Bev had him placed towards the west end of the building, whereas Colin found him placed near the high altar at the east end. Although not much could be gotten from this figure, he did make the temperture drop considerably. Also, unknown at the time - it appears this William could be connected to the events in the crypt later. (See RESEARCH UPDATES)
BTM`s Manda and Alan both ascended the spiral staircase to the upper walkways, built within the thickness of the walls. These access passages were certainly active with spirit, and the BTM team were catching several excellent orb pics. Both Alan and Manda explored the upper levels, with GHT members Pete and Dave earlier having done this too, we all felt it was a wonderful added bonus to gain entry to sections of the church barely seen...

THE BONE CRYPT

The two teams made their way outside via the porch and along the south side of the church to a large double doorway positioned under the level of the chancel. This is the entrance to the famous "ossuary" or bone crypt of Hythe. Once unlocked, both teams entered the underground chamber...
This famous crypt, one of only two known in England - and rare too, its a feature more common abroad - is lined with shelves containing 2000 skulls, and stacked neatly along the left side are a collection of some 8000 thigh bones. Its a gruesome yet thrilling sight. Once more our report here copies exactly the Record Sheet as written by James from GHT.

23:40hrs:  Pete picks up on a knight, Colin decides to try and help by trying to get a name. He succeeds in getting Walter Fitz-hume.    23:43hrs:    Pete gets images of an entire army from the Norman period. Sheree picks up on a woman called Amelia. Bev from BTM picks up on a female spirit which says "Thank you".    23:48hrs:    Colin has gone abit too far, ending up in a trance as a spirit connects to show him images. Alot of information is coming through after Bev, Manda and the GHT team get Colin out of the trance-like state. Colin has seen a knight, or more correctly, has seen through a knights eyes images of a group walking up to a kneeling figure and then commiting a violent act.    23:50hrs:   Bev holds Colin`s hand and get some of these images too, confirming Colin`s statements. She see`s a knight with a breastplate, the colour of red on it (blood???) although there might be some yellow and white, very hard to tell. Colin describes the knight as being intensive, forceful and aggressive in nature. He is able to hold a double-handed sword with ease and in one hand. This Walter character definately has three companions with him, so there are four of them altogether.   00:03hrs:    Colin can clearly see the sword Walter holds, it glints in the sun or light, has intricate engraving along the blade, a large wristguard, silver medallion at end of handle, and red binding along the grip. Its a personal item to Walter...   00:07hrs:    Colin says that Walter is showing him cleaning this sword of blood by wiping the blade on the leather shinguards he wears. The engraving tell a story of a battle along the sword blade..   00:12hrs:    Bev tell Colin he must say "thank you" to Walter for showing him all this, Colin does, and gets a reply...  "...it has to be done!!".  With this the crypt vigil is closed down.

INSIDE THE CHURCH - PT 2

Both teams returned back inside the church. Both Alan and Manda from BTM expressed an interest to return to the upper level walkways to try and get more contact with whatever was up there. GHT team members stayed at ground level taking pictures and filming until it was decided by both teams that the activity was quite low and it was time to leave. The investigation closed down approx 1am.

SUMMARY

A remarkable location!!  certainly ranking as one of the best GHT has been inside and although not crammed full of spirit activity, what spirits are there do like to make themselves known with spectacular results. The crypt is a truely unerving place, and you do have a constant feeling of being watched...  no doubt from all those "eyeless" sockets in the skulls...  the mystery of just how the bones came to be there is unsolved although several theories abound. The church guidebook goes with the "official" story that they are merely burials from a cramped churchyard removed to make way for more burials, but you really get the feeling that this is a story which is too neat, too perfect..  its not hard to think that your staring at the bodily remains of long-dead Saxon warriors, killed in a nearby battle and laid to rest here in the 13th century. This however can never be proven, although tests on some of the skulls did show they pre-dated the building they are housed in.
Also remarkable is the information that came from a hitherto reluctant source - Colin...!!!  The entity which chose to show him all the sights from its former life was given a name which has been perplexing both Colin, Andy and Liz. When told about the events, Andy felt sure there was a Canterbury connection - further results on this have been found, and all we can say is that if you wish to know, go now to the RESEARCH UPDATES page...
Overall - an excellent vigil...   Many thanks go out to BEYOND THE MIST (EKPG) for allowing us to join them, plus special mention to Manda and Bev for helping Colin in the crypt, and also to James to getting us access to such a wonderful building at night

BINHAM & CAISTOR 2 (NORFOLK)
DATE:   14TH MARCH 2008
TIME:    21:25HRS
TEAM:   COLIN - LIZ - DAVE - EMMA - PETE - JAMES
GUESTS:    CHRIS
EQUIPMENT:  DVD CAMCORDER (NIGHTVISION) - 7 X DIGITAL CAMERAS - 2 X EMF METERS - 1 X LASER THERMOMETER - 6 X TWO-WAY RADIOS - TORCHES - DICTAPHONE - TRIGGER OBJECT
CLOSED VIGIL - INVITED GUESTS ONLY
     V

The team opted to travel back to the remote Binham Priory yet again in an effort to try to find out a bit more about the dark entity which forced their hasty departure back in 2007. This trip was minus team regulars Andy and Sheree due to prior commitments and illness. At least the weather was kinder this time, with overcast skies but warm, alot warmer than last visit!!.  This vigil also had a "mystery location" added which was to be Baconsthorpe Castle, however access at night to this site was blocked by a locked gateway despite the English Heritage guidebook stating that access is free at any reasonable time. Clearly some quick thinking was required and the solution was to drive to the other side of Norwich and head for Caister St Edmund, the Roman town site GHT had investigated at the start of 2007. And so the evening was set with a two-stage invo which gave some surprises and more evidence of Binham`s macabre past....

RESULTS

BINHAM PRIORY VIGIL
The team arrived at the site very apprehensive after the events of the last visit. Colin immediately selected both Dave and Pete to walk down to the kiln room, site of the ill-fated circle from the last investigation. Colin asked both Pete and Dave to see if they sensed or picked up on anything bad which would stop the possiblity of any investigation going ahead. Neither Dave or Pete picked up anything so Colin decided to let the vigil commence...

21:25  -  Things seem to kick off as soon as the whole team are together when several hear a loud "plopping" sound like a pebble in water.    21:30  -  Dave, James and Colin set up the dictaphone experiment.    21:35  -  Pete picks up the name of Charlotte Sawkins.   21:37  -  Liz picks up on an old man with a staff and Dave connects with a beggar in an old, well-used cloak and no shoes. Dave says his feet are hurting.    21:40  -  Pete gets the year 1684 for Charlotte and says "she was raped by him". He then gets a name of Clement from Charlotte.     21:45  -  Dave gets Mary Stone and the date 1810.    21:50  -   Colin and Chris set up the trigger object experiment near the altar in the choir. Dave picks up on the name Tony Hancock but cannot reason why.   21:58  -  Circle commenced in Chapter house.    22:00  -  Colin calls out for Alexander De Langley and William De Somerton, Dave gets a tap on his head and feels a heat-like blast, like fire. Both Pete and Dave feel warm from this heat.   22:05  -  Chris get an image of a man in a broad rimmed hat. Dave gets feeling of being touched by something. Liz thinks its a female doing it.    22:07  -  Dave see`s someone walk behind Emma, its Clementine or Clement he says, walking around and laughing. Emma has warm air blown in her face. Dave feels that this entity was above the law and enjoyed the power he had over people, especially those that owed him money.   22:10  -   Dave says something or someone is attacking his legs.  22:12  -  Circle closed down. Dictaphone collected.    22:15  -  Trigger Object retrieved with no visible result.   22:20  -   Team moved to choir to conduct another circle.   22:30  -  Circle is never started due to James capturing various orb pics and both Dave and Pete seeing dark shadows near a wall at the eastern end. Emma starts to feel nauseous.   22:33  -  approx 3 to 4 shadows now being seen, more appearing.  22:35  -  Dave is told "GET OUT" from somewhere/someone and the decision is made to leave Binham Priory before we outstay our welcome. Still, we managed to get alot more done here this time than we did last visit.

The vigil`s second location - a mystery location that was only to be revealed whilst on investigation - was to be Baconsthorpe Castle, but access was blocked, therefore the team headed south to Caister St Edmund, just outside Norwich and scene of the first 2007 vigil we did.

LUNCH BREAK -  Well deserved tea, coffee and food!!

CAISTER ST EDMUND
Arriving here it was very noticible that Norfolk County Council and the Archeological trust had been improving signage around the site which included handy mobile phone tours. Due to the number of sheep left out in the farside field nearest the village, it was not possible to walk the entire wall walk, instead the team headed down the south rampart towards the river and the surviving bastion tower. We also took time to investigate the church and churchyard again.

01:10  -  Start vigil    01:20  - Liz sees a woman by the church tower, describes her as a sheppardess01:41  -  Pete picks up on a woman - name of Emily Winger - who may be connected to Liz`s woman (one and the same?) who is happy to be here with her Dad. The number 57 is given too. Pete connects with the name Terence.   02:20  -  The team minus Chris and Liz walk down to the bastion. Once there Dave sweeps it with the EMF Meter and gets the same 0.1 reading, plus the same clicking sound we got on the first visit here. Also, a couple of times the meter just went crazy, really high sound and reading then nothing. Team also noted a strange echo delay effect when using the radio to contact Chris and Liz.  02:30  -  South rampart, Dave sees campfires, people entertaining towards the direction of the amphitheatre site.   02:40  -  Vigil closes down.

SUMMARY

Binham gave us a hint of what is trying to communicate up there, although its being seriously held back by the very negative entity or entities that seem to have a hold on the priory ruins. Although likely this is caused by Alexander De Langley and William De Somerton back in the 13th/14th century, without any reply back to Colin`s callout session there is little to confirm this. The majority of spirit names and dates the team got would seem to point to a time well after the priory had ceased to run and more likely at the time when rich landowners were given old ruined churches to build grand halls and estates on. It will be interesting to check out the names we got with records from this time regarding land ownership.
Caister was an after-thought by Colin to replace the chosen Baconsthorpe location, but it seems it was not a disappointment, the site once again yeilding up some very interesting names. A marked absense from this Caister vigil was the fact that we got no reccurence of the Roman spirits that Dave got last time, nor did we get the Friar and the lepers, also picked up on in the 2007 vigil. Where were they hiding we wonder....???

EAST SOMERTON & BURGH CASTLE (NORFOLK)
DATE:   5TH APRIL 2008
TIME:    20.00HRS
TEAM:   COLIN - LIZ - ANDY - PETE - JAMES - SHEREE
GUESTS:    CHRIS
EQUIPMENT:  DVD CAMCORDER (NIGHTVISION) - 7 X DIGITAL CAMERAS - 2 X EMF METERS - 1 X LASER THERMOMETER - 6 X TWO-WAY RADIOS - TORCHES
CLOSED VIGIL - INVITED GUESTS ONLY

Following a change of plan for the location, GHT once again headed into Norfolk, this time further across to the eastern side of the county and the Gt Yarmouth area. As we headed out, the weather was doing its best to deter us with showers of rain, sleet, snow and one particular short, sharp hail storm just outside Bury St Edmunds!!  But we carried on...
This was to be an investigation of two locations, one of which had been visited before by Liz, Colin and Chris simply in the capacity of a day out and not as part of any investigation. The first site had not been visited by any of the team and was chosen simply because it had been shown on a TV programme and just seemed an ideal place to go. So, without further ado...  welcome to East Somerton Church and Burgh Castle Roman Fort...!

RESULTS

EAST SOMERTON CHURCH RUINS
There is little in the way of words that can amply explain how you feel seeing this ruin for the first time, its in a small patch of woodland and decaying slowly, huge gaps in the walls where doors used to be, and a chancel arch leading to nothing - not even the chancel walls survive. Its a sorry place made even more sorry looking when you arrive in the dark with high winds and rain. But it is unique in being a totally new site for the team to try and to our knowledge, never previously used for a paranormal investigation. Once again, the Recording sheets have been meticalously kept by James, who even had his own pen for the occasion!!

20:30 -  Arrived at location    20:31 -  Pete hears ringing in the bell tower when he walks in, Andy says there are two bells which Pete also confirms    20:35 -  Andy picks up on Father Micheals (Colin has to show Andy a mobile phone text from Medium Lynne Thorpe who said to ask protection of the Angel Micheal, just in case Andy was picking up on this instead). Pete picks up on a priest by the name of Isamiah who s an old man with a long pointed beard, also pointed nose which looked broken, of about the age of 60 and Pete felt he was Jewish.    20:40 -  Andy describes Father Micheals to Chris on DVD camcorder.    20:41 -   Temp around team about 7 to 9 degrees celcius.   20:42  -  Pete gives a surname for Isamiah, its Macci and a date about 1817 is also given. Call out session started.  20:46 -  Pete feels like he is hit around the head during call-out session, its Isamiah showing Pete how he died, hit by an object, a piece of gravestone.
20:50 -   Andy picks up on Gwendoline, which we know from previous contacts is actually Medium Lynne Thorpe projecting herself.    21:01 -  Circle commences in Tower archway. Andy picks up on a little girl called Esther, golden hair, pink ribbon with blue dress. She is playing with her brother Robert and is laughing and giggling. Pete gets image of Rupert the Bear, Andy get the age of 4 for Esther. Esther had been also seen by Colin near the east end of the church and he could also see her again within the strength of the circle. Esther is looking for her bear and she likes the red cushioned pew. Colin gets the name Stally and its directed at Andy, he feels its a double-barrelled name. He then gets an image of the man in military uniform, a regimental figure...  double name caught by Andy as Stallyson-Fourth (or could he simply have called out "sally forth!"...??). Both Pete, Liz and Andy work together getting Esthers Mum called Susan. Esther thinks Sheree looks like her Mum and is standing close to her. She has now also found her teddybear. Colin quotes the regimental man as shouting "i wear these medals with pride!". He is a Colonel, about age 40`s to 50`s with brown hair.   21:22 -  Circle is closed down by Andy.  21:28 -  Andy suggests the group exit the church. Pete says a negative energy passed through them durg the circle and everything was getting darker.   21:30 -  The bells had stopped ringing since the team left the church. (NB: there are no actual bells left in the ruined tower, but both Pete and Andy distinctly heard them).   21:36 -  James, Pete and Andy see a bright light near the entrance and a dark figure leaning against the wall.   21:27 - With the rest of the team outside, Andy and Pete return to the church, but soon returned, Pete having been "shoved" by Isamiah who was laughing....
With this, the team left the site to move onto the next location.

22:00 -   LUNCH BREAK, or as its become known - feeding time for the animals!

BURGH CASTLE ROMAN FORT
Seen in daylight, the view across Breydon Water from this Fort is simply stunning - seen at night, its a view of sporadic glittering lights and full of wildlife sounds of birds and animals. Quite eerie unless your in the know! Its a vast irregular rectangle of strong Roman masonary made from courses of flint and red tiles on three sides and a long embankment on the other side near the water where the wall had long since fallen. What better place to look for ghosts....????   The site had not just Roman connections, but also Saxon with the building of a small monastic church in the eastern corner, and later still, a Norman motte and bailey castle making use of the western corner defences. GHT had plenty to work with here...

23:31 -   Started vigil. Andy immediately picks up on Roman soldiers and Saxons, but can only "see" the Romans...    23:32 -  Liz picks up on a lady with fair hair and a single platt, possibly not Roman, wearing a beige colour dress23:33 -   Andy picks up on a Cattle Farmer with rotten teeth! He appears to being wearing a "medieval hoody".   23:35 - Andy picks up on fishing boats    23:36 -   Pete picks up on smuggling, seeing loading etc  of 15 or more barrels, and people wearing dark clothing.   23:37 -   Pete gets a year of 1377 for the smugglers.    23:38 -   Andy can see a battle fought here between Romans and Saxons. He also picks up on Norway or the Norwegian Royal Family being connected.   23:48 -  James picks up on an unexpected land attack and people charging.   23:58 -  Andy is picking up on spears and shields.    00:05 -   Andy gets the name Marcus, a centurian/soldier. He wears a cloak, oblong shield and holds a spear.
00:07 -  Andy commences a circle. There is little response during the circle, with only the feeling of being pushed by something/someone from James and Andy. All names connected with at the Fort were tried but no spirit came forward.
00:21 -   Andy decides to close the circle. This then concludes the investigation at the Burgh Castle Roman Fort.

SUMMARY

It was another interesting mix of time periods from two sites. East Somerton was an unexpected delight with many names coming forward and at least one firm date to check. In retrospect whilst writing up this report, two things have come to mind regarding the vigil at the church. Firstly, the name Pete aquired as ISAMIAH maybe incorrectly read, since the Latin text often subsituted the letter "I" for the letter "j", eg: Jehovah would read Iehovah. Since Pete`s name seems to be Jewish, the correct spelling could be Jsamiah or even Jeramiah...   Secondly, Colin`s name for the regimental guy could also be a mistake. Colin got "Stally" but Andy later got "Stallyson-Forth", like a double barrel name. However Colin had said this character was walking around the west end of the church making comments at the service going on, he had already said about the pride he had wearing his medals, perhaps the other was not his name but a command - Sally Forth, or go forward...
Burgh Castle was a little quiet, although not without activity. The team has captured some good orb pictures here. Again - a comment needs to be made regarding Pete`s suggestion that Julius Caesar was given to him. Firstly, its impossible for THE Julius Caesar to have visited Burgh Castle as the fort never exited in his lifetime, it was a later 3rd/4th century construction AD, and Caesar was in the 54/55BC period when in Britain. Its also doubtful he ever got out of Kent during his abortive invasion. The more likely explanation is that Pete was getting two separate names, as both Julius and Caesar are common Roman names. Andy also picked up on Marcus which again was a common name, in fact Andy has picked up on a Marcus at both Caister St Edmund and Reculver. Different spirits or are we being followed by the same one....??
To sum up - a thoroughly good evening not even the weather and the cold could stop. Several team members have expressed a desire to return, possibly in daylight.

After a number of previous delays, GHT has now finally returned to Epping Forest. Of course Colin assisted Team members from BTM (EKPG) and Medium Lynne Thorpe on an investigtion here in 2006, but he hasn`t taken GHT to this location yet...  until now!! With the location a secret from the Team sensitives until the last minute, GHT ventured into the heart of the forest, famed for so any varied hauntings and strange phenomena.

REPORT

HIGH BEACH CHURCH
The Team arrived onsite, and Colin immediately asked Andy to place protection down, since on the visit with BTM and Lynne, some very negative energy made itself known in the woods beyond the church. With protection in place, the Team headed towards the church and churchyard.
19:55  -  Dave picks up on the name William, connected with rum smuggling and is getting stabbing pains in his side.   20:25  -  Andy, James and Sheree do not feel happy here.    20:30 - Dave also feels unhappy here.   20:35 - Further protection put down. Dave gets a woman moving near the church gate in a white dress with red flowers on it, age about 35. Andy gets the name Emily. Dave gets Childs as the surname. Both Andy and Dave agree she is from 1895.   20:45 - Andy is not happy at all with the area. James has to return to car as he feels unwell. Colin and Dave both detect what feels like raindrops yet the sky is clear and weather dry.   20:46 - Andy and James see what they describe as looking like "witchlords" from Lord of the Rings, standing by church signboard.   21:00 - Pete see`s older church near monolith grave. James gets two orbs on film at monolith. Dave records temp at monolith 7 degrees warmer than surrounding area. Monolith grave is resting place of George Parnell and is inscribed down its sides with Runes, they read as a passage taken from Norse legend Beowulf. James and Liz see an old bloke with greying hair, very long, creased face, tanned and wearing a wooly top and shirt like a school teacher in the year 1842. Too associated burials near monolith are: Helen Smenton and Austin K Smenton. Parnell was a writer.  21:10 - Some on the team move into the woods at the rear of church. A large tree draws team. Its a portal. Dave and Pete get the word "Death" near it...  Dave see`s a female face with red eyes. Andy warns all of the team in the woods to retreat.  21:15 - Pete see`s people hanging from the trees. Dave get the phrase "Lucifers bidding" said to him.  Colin decides to move the Team on to the next location. Team ends vigil at High Beach.

LUNCH BREAK

THEYDON MOUNT CHURCH
Situated on a hill behind Hill Hall and the noise of the M25 Motorway, this was chosen at random off the map out of the forest area because our investigation at the church was drawing not just negative spirit energy but the attention of some of the local youths too, so we decided to try the church at Theydon Mount.
22:30 - James gets name Jack Warsworth just as vigil starts. Andy see`s a boy and girl playing. Dave see`s flashing lights on church. 22:45 - Andy gets name Edward Jackson, Liz confirms this and thinks he may be standing by the gate. 22:55 - Andy and Dave see white figure head for gate area.  23:00 - Pete gets Gracey Miller in the mid 40`s age range, team actually locates grave!   23:03 - Andy commences circle with protection around gravestone. James see`s a figure in front of him but behind Emma, its female. Dave gets Julia for little girl playing. Liz gets Jonathan for little boy playing. Andy gets Brother Francis and the smell of smoked bacon (burning flesh??). Dave feels his testicles being tickled. Chris gets a stabbing feeling. Circle closes.  23:20 - Pete feels Gracey didnt die naturally but was poisoned.  James gets 1857 for John Woodwart23:30 - Another Circle is opened by Andy near church porch. James see`s a shadow. Dave see`s lights. Liz hears a female voice. Andy see`s Gracey ghost near yew tree, she seems interested in why we are here. James see`s white light near yew tree. Dave see`s dark shadow, thinks it might be male.  23:45 - Pete and Andy see its getting very dark near the group. Andy closes the circle and asks everyone to leave the churchyard. 23:55 - Brother Francis is on path towards cars.  00:00 - Dave pocessed by Roman Soldier Marcus Triton (?) in red tunic, stoky, full beard, mousey brown hair, aged 38-40, wearing a helmet with a crest and guarding church. Andy helps Dave out of pocession and the Investigation closes down.

SUMMARY

It was very surprising that whilst in Epping Forest, none of the sensitives picked up on any of the key hauntings or related names - surprising, but thankfully ultimately more pleasing as im sure after the MOST HAUNTED visit here, everyone had had enough of Dick Turpin!!  Still, other links to Boudicca or Tom King would have been nice. At High Beach we located a powerful Portal - quite simply a gateway for spiritual energy to enter our World. The feeling of dread around it and the sense of death was overpowering, and we were most definately being watched...  Also, we feel there may be a connection to the Parnell monolith grave and its Runes, however, Chris did point out he was a writer and that his lifetime fitted neatly with the period when Tolkein was writing his books. Even so, its strange to find such engravings on graves and one cannot help but wonder if we are dealing with a Cunning Man and a Coven of 13 - the number of figures Lynne reported seeing when she was with Colin here last time. Theydon Mount church was surprising if a little quiet for activity. Two things do stand out - prior to the second circle by the porch, Pete was using the EMF meter near the door where it repeatedly went off the scale. Now this could be something electrical behind the door, but he got the same reading for quite a wide area away from the door too. Secondly, Dave getting pocessed by a Roman soldier...  well, unknown to anyone on the team apart from Colin, the Theydon site is within half a mile of a known Roman Road, so its very possible for a Roman ghost to appear...
Overall, an excellent night, in which many of the team expressed interest to return sometime, so we proberly will..!

They often say that England is one of the most haunted countries around, and that Kent is one of the most haunted counties. Thousands of years of history have passed through Kent so its little wonder that the dead of times long gone still dwell within its boundaries. One such place is Eastwell Park...  in this, the first time GHT has visited the site, it was soon obvious that Royalty had indeed passed the area and left it mark. A tragic site too, for reasons our sensitives picked up on in regards to a young woman. After such a fresh site to investigate, we later moved onto familiar ground of the haunted sites in and around Pluckley, kicking off with a fascinating vigil in the Screaming Woods, and then relocating to the impressive ruins of St Mary`s, Little Chart to conduct a Circle. Oh...  and anyone not believing in Black Dog stories at haunted sites, think again when you visit St Mary`s...

EASTWELL PARK
Hidden amongst a maze of single-track, high hedged lanes only a stones throw from Ashford and the M20 lies the evocative Eastwell Park and Lake. The Pilgrims Way runs along its boundary, and the area is rich with Royal links. Eastwell Park consists of the large lake, the old manor house dating to 1550 (not accessible during vigil) and the church ruins on the north bank of the lake. The Team arrives and equipment is handed out. There is a good sense that the site is very special.   19:35 -  Andy places protection down on team    19:40 -  Andy gets name Celia. James gets a woman in a long black dress while Andy see it as blue   19:45 - James see`s Celia with shoulder length hair and red lips   20:00 - Both James and Andy say she is curious. Celia has a parasol and maybe late Victorian, both James and Andy point at her location as she watches us. James gets something on camera. Andy get temp reading of 5.7 to 5.9 degrees   20:05 -  Andy gets an opressive feeling in the atmosphere and hears "not here...", he feels something else is watching us, Pete however isnt getting that, he see`s a little girl with tight blonde ringlets. Andy says atmosphere is depressing.  20:10 - James feels sad and wants to cry. Andy says Celia drowned, and James confirms this by saying in the lake   20:15 - James says there is a man walking around the site of the church ruins. Pete is getting battle sounds, swords clashing and a feeling of pain and suffering plus a name V. Strom, possibly connected to the battle   20:20 - Andy`s camera ejects batteries for no reason. Camera is checked for faults but none found, and Sheree`s camera freezes up under large Yew tree    20:25 -  Pete says fighting is on a shire. Andy is getting a Saxon word, then he see`s what can only be described as Dad`s Army`s Private Godfrey type spirit holding a book and mouthing "we`re doomed!", and gets a Domesday Book connection.  20:30 - Pete attracted to lake where Celia was actually pushed in. Andy see`s a village plundered. Pete confirms the shire he mentioned begins with the letter "L".   20:35 - Both Pete and Andy get goosebumps, a feeling Black Magic has been performed here, Pete gets given "Satan". They both experience hot sensation in feet. End of church has temp of 8.9 down to 8.5 degrees. Pete is given "The beast may come20:40 - Andy gets taste of iron in mouth like blood, Pete says there was a sliced throat or beheading done near Plantagenet tomb. James is by the lake, he says Celia was hit on back of head and fell into the water  20:45 - Pete gets tight feeling in chest near where Celia fell in. Say the area dosn`t feel right. James see`s a dark haired male who pushed Celia into the lake, he has a pain on the back of his head and a damp feeling like his hair is soaked in blood. Orbs caught on camera. Colin hears loose masonary fall inside the blocked-off tower of the church. Vigil closes down.

PLUCKLEY, BLACK HORSE PUB - Quick stop to celebrate Sheree`s birthday!!

LUNCH BREAK

PLUCKLEY - SCREAMING WOODS
GHT loves this location...  there is such a wealth of activity going on here, alot of it reported on previous investigations which you can read on the REPORTS section and also in the LOCATIONS section of this site. This vigil wasn`t going to disappoint either. Despite the car park and woods having been used by local youths and Top Gear TV programme, there is still much to be found here, and we dare anyone to just walk down the path from the parking area a short distance without feeling just a little bit uneasy!  After our lunchbreak, we continued our investigation...  21:55 to 22:30 - Still during the lunchbreak really, but Pete reports his car being thumped on, Sheree feels uneasy, James see`s horses and a young boy playing in the woods behind them. Sheree see`s a blue light on dashboard, even though Pete`s car has no such light! Pete does a mini-call out in car but gets nothing   23:00 - Start of vigil in woods, James gets Oliver for the little boy. Andy see`s lights in the woods   23:05 - James see`s red light in woods, Andy feels oppressed but gets the name of Clive given, Pete gets a negative feeling. Andy has difficulty breathing, tight chest. James picks up on a forester/gamekeeper. Pete gets a blow to the head but neither he, Andy or Sheree see anything   23:10 - Colin see`s something along the path ahead and Sheree and Pete hear a noise  23:25 - James describes forester bloke as wearing chequered shirt, dark hair, beige trousers, big black ankle boots with an object being carried in right hand (pos gun??). He gets the name Fred or Fredrick  23:30 - Pete walking back to cars picks up on Matthew Hopkins and two "bodyguards" with him. Team leave woods to drive back to village.  23:40 - Passing Fright Corner, Pete starts choking, feeling like rope around his neck and people looking at him dying. The attack is so strong it forces both Pete and Colin to pull over and stop until Pete can recover enough to continue.

ST MARY`S CHURCH RUINS, LTTLE CHART
The team arrives at the ruins of the doodlebug blasted church, a brief walkabout starts, then with more protection added, we start the vigil here.   00:00 - James picks up on a female by the name of Ann Marie. At east end of church, Pete picks up on three girls running and laughing, and both Andy and James pick up on the laughter too. Andy gets name of Emily and decides to do a call-out. Sheree throws a stone to get a response, but nothing. Colin walks along end of churchyard, find two glowing yellow eyes on the path infront of him belonging to a Black Dog.... Just like Black Shuck!!!!     ...which is joined by a white terrier type dog, both start barking!  Colin wonders if next time he should bring a change of underwear!!  00:10 - Andy gets touched on his hand   00:20 - Pete and Andy see red and white lights near grave of Pioneer W. Matcham, age 60 and died on 25/2/17. Stomping heard in church by James, made by "Cedric", a slight shadow is seen too   00:25 - Andy, Pete, James and Sheree do a circle   00:30 - Andy gets a tall gentleman - its Cedric and he stands behind Andy. Pete gets "its the funny one back again" said to him referring to Andy, but then has whispered into his ear "Are you a man?". Andy and Pete deduce that Cedric may be homosexual. 00:36 - James gets tickling on back of neck   00:40 - Cedric then tells Pete that Andy looks like his brother and that "...he has his Mary". Sheree gets a priest or monk (See RESEARCH UPDATES referring to previous Pluckley vigils) and Andy see`s a priest behind him.  00:50 - Andy closes circle due to Camcorder disc running low on space.

SUMMARY

Well, the first location was impressive!  so much energy there and all the sensitives in the Team came away having picked up on something or other, plus there was the intriging links with the Plantagenet Royal family, and a battle that Pete picked up on. And the unfortunate story of Celia, murdered after being hit on the head and pushed into the lake and left to drown. Poor James nearly went on an emotional rollercoaster as he pieced together the fragments of her last minutes but it was well worth it. Perhaps BTM (EKPG) might like to visit here to put this sad ghost to rest?     ....as for Pluckley, well - for a start the woods didn`t disappoint!!  once more the energy crackled with life in there, and the spirits in the forest made themselves known. Hopkins appeared yet again, but caused no problem (why he is here we still don`t know!), however poor Pete suffered the effects of what appeared to be a hanging near Fright Corner. Now a Highwayman was killed there, but the story goes his attackers gained the upper hand on him during a swordfight and he got pinned the tree that once stood there, as far as we can tell there was no hanging, but then again, crossroads like that were favourite places for gibbets, and maybe Pete experienced that...   St Mary`s Church was really active, too active if you include real-life dogs!!  But interesting glimpses into the caretaker Cedric`s life were found out, plus we now think we know why he was drawn to Andy last visit and both Andy AND Pete this time, and its not for their charm and wit...!!
Another fantastic vigil, proving that we can still find exciting new sites in Kent, without older ones needing to be forgotten.

VIGIL RUN BY:  SPIRITUAL INVESTIGATIONS
     V

Not long after the initial GHT vigil at Epping in May, Colin learnt from Lynne Thorpe of SPIRITUAL INVESTIGATIONS that another vigil was being planned for the Midsommer weekend, more correctly on the 21st June. However, due to limited numbers able to attend, Colin decided to take along just one other Core Team member plus a Guest. The combined team`s met up outside the forest before going to the first location.

REPORT

HIGH BEACH LAKES
A walk around of about an hour or so near the lake here provided some interesting observations from the two main mediums Lynne and Bernadette. The was evidence again that the track way through the woods, although a modern bridleway, had indeed been used by more ancient travellers. Colin surmised that the route bears an uncanny alignment linking Waltham Abbey to Loughton and may indeed be an old trackway or coaching route.
Several small, strange structures were found within the woods - purpose unknown. Lynne linked in with a spirit child whilst sat inside one. The construction method of all these small huts was similiar, and could indeed be just children playing, but at least two showed signs of a "cross" shape laid on them. Intentional or not, it was very curious.

AMBRESBURY BANKS HILLFORT
This Iron Age Fort has had long associations with Boudica the Tribal Queen of the Iceni...  thing is, no-one is certain that she ever visited this site, although its a strong chance it was known to her. This doesn`t stop links with the fort and ghost sightings of her being reported. Our walkabout produced actually very little here, we did come across some more "structures" as described above, but were still no clearer towards the meaning and function.

HIGH BEACH CHURCH
This is where the bulk of the vigil took place. Once we had made way for another team to vacate the churchyard, we made a start on getting around the George Parnell Menton gravemarker, a huge megalith inscribed with Runes...

00:30 -  Start vigil at monolith grave.  00:50 - Lynne and Bernadette use a translation of the Runes, believing it made be an incantation, and read it out over the grave. Afterwards both say they feel something is behind them and that the ground is vibrating.   00:55 -  Lynne feels an icy breeze. Liz feels something blowing on her neck.  01:00 -   the team move up to the church, then onwards to the tree "portal" in the woods at the back of the building.  01:08 -  Lynne feels very cold.  01:09 -  Lynne does a call out.  01:10 - Lynne gets headache, plus both Colin, Lynne and Liz hear a cats` meow01:12  - Bernadette says it feels like the team is being "enclosed".   01:14 - Lynne hears movement, Barry`s camera dies with no power left. Bernadette feels like she has been scratched on the face by something.  01:15 - Team go further into the woods.  01:17 -  Find another shelter-like structure in woods, as described before.  01:20 -  Back to tree portal again.   01: 25 -  Bernadette hears a sound, says its like a door opening  01:26 -  Circle opened by Lynne near portal  01:27 -  Lynne see`s a pair of red eyes in tree   01:29Dean is touched on shoulder. Lynne and Bernadette feel vibration again and the centre of the circle is freezing cold01:30 - Colin gets pain in back of leg. Lynne see`s a man with red eyes and hears footsteps walking   01:35 -  Lynne is given the name Roger Matthews, 17th March, 1747. Bernadette gets "hmmm" said in her ear. She also see`s red lights or eyes and gets her finger pinched01:40 -  Barry has two large red eyes behind him seen by both Lynne and Bernadette. They also hear grunting from behind themselves. Bernadette begins to feel sick.  01:45 - Lynne closes the circle.

SUMMARY

Overall, a very, very interesting night!!   Questions still remain over what the purpose of the structures was found in the woods, and just how active are the fort and the lakes, but there is little doubt that High Beach church and the wood by it are highly active. This may or may not have something to do with George Parnell Menton and his Runic-inscribed megalith. Lynne felt that his body was NOT under the marker, and that it lay across the road, unmarked - in the woods where the old church stood. His megalith also has a Christian cross crudely incised into the stone above his name. Its very clear this was added later than the text and Runes. Was someone trying to undo the Paganism attached to this marker??  Did they leave the body of a Pagan worshipping Cunning Man in an unmarked grave??  Maybe a return to Epping sometime may answer these questions.

OPEN VIGIL
     V

Okay, a bit of a first for GHT - not that we went back to Hadleigh Castle, that was on the cards anyway, no - it was that most of the team had expressed a wish to see the ruins during daylight to get a better understanding of the layout and surrounding area. To fit this into a vigil, and to make use of the surprisingly warm weather - we held a Picnic Vigil..  possibly the first one ever done, and certainly something we would be keen to repeat in future, although it would have been nice if more Core Team had been available. Once the picnic was out of the way, the real vigil could begin..!!

REPORT

HADLEIGH CASTLE RUINS
We did have to contend with a number of members of the public, youngsters mainly - still in the castle even at 20:00hrs!  But then it is a Country Park as well and they are just as much allowed to be there as we were. We decided to move to the other side of the Great Tower and down the slope onto a flattish, sloping hill going away from the castle. that eventually went to a mill Previous visits with GHT and Lynne Thorpe have confirmed this area was used for some sort of small village or fair outside the castle walls, although its lifespan may have been as short as that of the castle it self. Vigil commenced at 22:10hrs.

22:20 - Chris gets several orbs on picture   22:40 - Whilst heading to mill area, Liz gets the name Henrietta, and says she is Edwardian, in a cream dress, brown hair, Pin-tucked feature on dress. Denise gets the surname Rothschild, says she is in early 20`s, about 25 and good looking.  Liz says its more of a brown skirt and cream blouse22:50 -  Denise gets a man shouting "Knight, Knight!!". Liz gets a man wearing a dark red tabbard. Den says he is a Squire and is holding a lance along with a brown horse, it has a red and yellow tabbard23:00 - Man in silver armour with a colour blue attached to him. Liz see`s two men (knights) on horseback, one horse is white. She gets name Montague Fitzwilliam and Den says he won a joust. Den then gets Oswald De Tracy- possibly his opponant (?). Liz then says Henrietta gave her a date of 1876.   23:05 -  lots of children, infant to toddlers - and a little girl crying for her Mummy, all picked up by Den. Both liz and Den pick up on a little boy - they believe the children to date from Saxon times.  23:20 - Den gets tap on leg - year 1532 given. As team gets closer to castle again, Henrietta comes through again saying she has lost her husband.  23:30 - Henrietta`s husband jumped from the Great Tower - Given to Den the same time she see`s a "man".  23:45 -  Vigil closes.

CANEWDON CHURCH
Although not originally planned as part of this vigil, the oppertunity to take both Chris and Denise up to the church was too good to miss as it was so near, so we headed to Canewdon. On arrival though, something stopped us in our tracks at the gateway. Fixed to the railings was an Essex Police notice saying: "SMILE - Your on camera!". Having not encountered this before and not knowing if it was just a deterrent sign against vandals, or if there really are cameras watching us, we decided to abandon plans to walk around the churchyard on this occasion. Lynne Thorpe has said she will check out this notice as GHT does have a planned vigil for Canewdon in December.

OPEN VIGIL
     V

Although fairly ambitious with the team covering several sites in one night, the sites were picked to be very close together, thus allowing for plenty of time to investigate each site. Alas due to the Bartlow Hills site already occupied by some local teenagers, we had no choice but to drop it from the list, but the other three sites more than made up for it.

REPORT

HADSTOCK AIRFIELD, BOWSERS LANE
The team parked at the end of Bowsers Lane, part of the the old perimeter track of the old USAF station. Walking down the lane, we came to what looked like a cluster of buildings dating from the wartime era, now being used as some sort of storage facility. Next to this was Nuns Wood. We commenced the vigil here...
20:45: -  vigil commences    20:52: -  Lynne gets a contact with a spirit by name of Lt. William Harper-Jackson, aged about 37, blues eyes, fair hair and 6ft - 3 in height.   20:53: -   Dave gets name Jones and the number 611   20:56: -  Lynne see`s a flat water wheel, a dark wood and it was used to direct water from a raised area.   21:01: -  Denise see`s a range rover. Barry feels that behind the gates was the storage depot for vehicles and engines   21:06: -  James see`s a man standing up in the road, which Dave confirms    21:21: -  James see`s a woman in a long flowing dress, pale pink, holding a basket of flowers, which Liz confirms   21:27: - Lynne gets the year 1512 and a possible wooden church  21:37: - on road by Nuns Wood Bungalow, Denise and James pick up on on three RAF men   21:43: - Colin see`s vehicle appear briefly on road, Dave confirms it was an American jeep with a white star on the bonnet.   22:00: - Vigil ended at Hadstock.

MARKS GRAVE
Not much was known about this location apart from the fact its marked on the map simply as "Marks Grave" and is the crossing point of the old Colchester to Chester Roman Road. Colin had been out here to recon the site and done a call-out session - in return had three stones thrown at him...!
22:30: -  Vigil commences   22;33: - weather changes, the site becomes very cold. Lynne hears the sound of a horse. A stone is thrown against Pete`s car and a group of men in skirts and sandals is seen    22:42: -  Lynne hears a growl, Pete feels discomfort in his left leg   22:43: - Both Liz and James see a shadow behind Pete`s car   22:54: -  Denise is being followed by "a man" in the hedgerow, both Denise and James describe him as scruffy   22:58: - Both Dave and Pete report seeing several red lights at the end of the Roman Road    23:05: - Vigil ends at Marks Grave

LUNCH BREAK

BARTLOW HILLS
Proposed vigil at Bartlow Hills had to be abandoned due to the site being occupied by teenagers

CASTLE CAMPS
The church stands apart from the modern village next door to the once impressive castle itself. Today just a series of earthworks, banks, ditches and moats give away the presense of the once proud castle and its surrounding village, of which only the church remains after the village migrated further towards the main Haverhill road crossroads. The team arrived to find eeriely that the church seemed lit from inside - upon inspection it was a single candle left alight in the chancel, but the effect was atmospheric. Castle Camps also has an airfield, a satallite station to  both Debden and Lt Walden during the war. Regretfully, we didnt have time to explore this..
00:45: - Vigil commences, Lynne and Bernadette both hear scratching sounds from inside the church near the south door in the porch  01:06 - The team gathers inside the porch to commence a circle. The whole team will be involved except Emma who is notetaking, and Colin who is filming.  01:14 - Circle commences, Dave reports the breeze from the left of the door has disappeared. Lynne asks for spirit to moved the huge porch light hanging from the roof beam, the light does begin to move. The part of the group near the church door feel an energy move through them. Lynne see`s an orb above Pete`s head and asks Pete to call out. Pete says he feels the same as he did on his first vigil, sad, depressed and wanting to cry.  01:27: -  James reports seeing a figure by a gravestone just outside the porch, white frilly shirt, baggy cuffs, name of George  01:30:-  Dave smells new leather, not sure where its coming from   01:30: - Denise says a Cromwellian soldier wants to hit the church door hard, get inside and smash the church up. The spirit takes over Denise and with both Lynne and Barry`s help they take the presense out of her, its channelled into Lynne. Soldiers name is John   01:35: - James reports a pilot outside the porch, green puffer jacket, goggles and black leather hat   01:38: - While channelling the spirit of John, through Denise they get that he hates witches. Barry is tells John that he will not get to do want he`s trying to do and he must leave Denise. John through Denise tells Lynne "you will die Witch!" so Lynne threatens the soldier. Denise says she can no longer fight him off  01:44: - The circle is broken off and closed while Barry and Bernadette go out to Lynne to help her rid herself of the spirit of John.

SUMMARY

All the sites gave excellent results, a shame we didn`t get to do Bartlow Hills but it does save it for another day, Still - pride of place this time must go to Castle Camps, the sheer ammount of activity there was staggering and, in the case of Denise, quite powerful too. It took Lynne a while to recover from passing this evil spirit over. Overall, an excellent choice of sites that may repay future re-visits..
NB: Thanks also go to Tony who has given us some excellent maps of the Hadstock Airfield to work on.

JOINT INVESTIGATION WITH:  BEYOND THE MIST (EKPG)
     V

After missing this location several times, we finally agreed to meet up once again with BEYOND THE MIST (EAST KENT PARANORMAL GROUP) to go to the fabled Saltwood, a place Manda from BTM has said on several occasions that it was well worth doing. So long with our SPIRITUAL INVESTIGATIONS friends we headed in Kent to see this enigma of the Paranormal....

SALTWOOD CHURCH
The joint teams arrived at the Parish church in Saltwood, secreted away down a narrow lane away from the village centre. Although it was hoped that we would all work together, it was soon clear that BTM was going to work separately at the churchyard while GHT and SPIRITUAL INVESTIGATIONS worked together. To our knowledge BTM made no notes of this investigation.
21:45: - Vigil commences - Little girl seen by church, aged 6 called Jane (no note who saw this was made on the record sheet) who has a black short dress, boots done up with "hook and eye" fastenings, and was watching us as we walked up the lane  22:00: - Bernadette is given name of Elizabeth - Andy feels there is a strong link forming that concerns Colin  22:03: - Link to Elizabeth Scott through grav
