HADLEIGH CASTLE
THE CASTLE VIGIL
Overlooking the Thames mudflats and Canvey Island,
is a bleak place... certainly ripe for ghosts and ghost hunting!!! The figure of a Black Monk/Abbot is just one of the many
spectres seen here, he is sometimes referred to as the Black Devil. Also there is the "woman in white" or White Lady, who
asked a local girl to meet her at the castle. The girl do not go, so - as the story says - the ghost went to find her and
hit her around the head!!!. More recently, other investigations here have revealed EVP on recording devices - so-called
spirit voices captured in mid-talk. Who knows what GHOST HUNT TEAM will find here when we return in 2006!!!
Below has to be the weirdest picture of the entire vigil. Taken by
Denise, it as if she has captured the breastplate armour of a soldier or knight. Is this an actual ghost??? Did we catch
something trying to manifest??? It is open to interpretation, but it looks so much like a piece of armour, its very hard
to discount it as anything else. We are of course aware that it could very well be just another trick of light with rain
caught in the flash of her camera, but we prefer to keep an open mind just in case.
The plan shows that Hadleigh has suffered
at its location from subsidence, and various walls lean at angles - creating quite strange shadows at night!!! Could this
be the source of some of its stories? A black monk or Abbot is one of its so-called inhabitants, as is a white lady. The
team tried to make contact with both, alas - no luck.
Several of our pictures contained points of light on them with what look
like "tails" behind them. These lightforms appear to be going upwards, which begs the question, if not raindrops, then what
else are they??? We did get a couple of clear orb pictures like this one below with Andy in it, the orb close by him on
the right. Both Andy, Denise and even Colin all reported hearing a voice attempting to clear its throat or cough twice.
This was heard first by Colin, and then later on about half hour onwards by the other two. However - all three heard this
at the same location, the main tower. Liz also picked up on the presence of a lady in the same tower, but could not get
a name for her, nor could she say if it was the same person responsible for the audible earlier. The voice did not come out
on the Digital Camcorder microphone.
With the rain hampering things quite a bit, we still
decided the best plan of attack was as two teams, so we split up. The main up-standing remains at one end of the site were
covered by Colin and Liz, whilst the Kitchen block was covered by Denise and Andy. Our photo`s seem to be showing a mix
of raindrops and orbs, however we cannot rule out the fact that even the orbs are water related. Perhaps filming or picture
taking after the rain stopped might have given a better idea about the Castle`s orb content.
Hadleigh Castle was revisited by GHT in 2006 and took along Medium Lynne Thorpe
to the site. The Great Tower site at the ruins was again the focus of activity, and several things happened here which
should be noted. First - several of the group were aware of the smell of decayed flesh which was very strong and in fact
did get to Colin after Lynne allowed the group protection to be lifted around him so he could sense it fully. Secondly, the
group followed several spirit children who seemed to be leading them on a chase at the bottom of an embankment. This was a
real cat & mouse game and lead the team back to the tower.
New team members Dave and Emma have captured several very clear orb pictures from
the site, and several are of the colour varity like reds and blues.
No contact was made with any of the known ghosts said to haunt the site, but the
spirits there were trying to give us some signs that they existed.
We would also like to thank the members of the MYSTERIAL
chat forum for their contributions towards the selection of ideas regarding this and other pictures. They have alot
of expertise and guidence with paranormal sites and photo evidence, and they have always shed new light on things that have
baffled us at the start. Anyone wishing to join their discussions (joining is free) should go to: http://mysterial.co.uk
CANEWDON CHURCH - Well known for its legends
and associations with Witchcraft, Canewdon Church stands proudly overlooking the surrounding landscape, its tall and imposing
tower built to a very high degree of craftsmanship. It is said that for as long as the tower stands, there will always be
Witches in Canewdon. There are also stories and witnessed events centred around George Pickingill, a male Witch who practised
the "dark-arts" and reigned the village and countryside through fear of his many powers. Canewdon village is practically sealed
off during Halloween, as in previous years many occultists, practising Witches and ghosthunters have decended on the area
and have caused the local residents some problems in the past.
CANEWDON CHURCH
This church is an oddity. It stands inside a rather irregular
churchyard and has a quite frankly outlandishly grand tower attached to a very simple, functional church. The present building
was started in the 13th century, possibly on the site of an even older Norman or Saxon church (Canewdon is a very old Saxon
name), but the tower was added sometime in the 15th century. There are signs around the tower that this grand work was never
fully finished, with niches and sculptures missing and heraldic shield blank and allowed to weather.
Colin took the oppertunity to visit this building with the
help of Medium Lynne Thorpe as a precursor to the intended vigil in November 2006. Below is a picture taken inside
the church, recently re-opened after some restoration work, and quite clearly showing some orbs, perhaps a taste of what
is to come when GHOST HUNT TEAM finally arrive there...

GHOST HUNT TEAM with Lynne Thorpe went to Canewdon Church in the latter
half of 2006 in search of George Pickingill and the other Witches, but... beforehand the group did a quick visit to
nearby Paglesham Churchend, and the results were very good!!! Lynne again picked up on the "Justice of the
peace" spirit that she and Colin ran into on the last visit there, only this time he was much more menacing, wanting the team
to leave the churchyard. Lynne said he "owned" that land and could see a Manor house on its site. We cannot unfortunately
confirm the existance of such a manor house, but this does not rule out such a building being in the area, and many churches
were linked to manors.
We also captured a "mist-like" picture in the churchyard near the wall,
backed up by an orb pic in the same place!!
At Canewdon church, Andy had a laspe of protection and fell victim to a
spirit which wanted to play a joke on him. He became very non-plus and did not seem himself. When questioned, he replied as
if he didn`t care about the vigil or the team, and in fact was not concerned by any of the events going on around him. Finally,
after coming out of it, he admitted he had not been prepared enough and had let his guard down. This is a reminder to us all
how important the placing of protection is on the group and individuals dealing with the spiritworld. This could have been
alot worse and ended differently, but as it was Andy was unharmed and just a little embarrassed.
Lynne conducted the circle at the churchyard here - and the results were
very encouraging. We had a spirit girl and a visit from Canewdon`s famous Grey Lady, but the highlight was another visit by
the 19th century "lady of the night" called Rachel. Andy again had the benefit of her attentions!!!
The circle was closed after repeated rustling noises from the hedgerow caused
concern and it was felt a large animal might be near. Investigation of the hedge afterwards proved inconclusive.
